The appointment: screening Colonoscopy

Ok so this might not be the most glamorous post, but we think it’s the most important one we’ve done yet. Katie Couric lost her husband 20 years ago to colon cancer and has devoted much of her time ever since to cancer research & education. She went on the Dr. Oz show last year to discuss colonoscopies more in depth & you can watch it HERE.

We’ve both had dear friends, and one of us a parent, who have had to fight colon cancer and we’re here to tell you it’s not pretty. It is, however, highly preventable & has a 90% cure rate if detected early. If you are turning 50, or if for some unknown reason you have already turned 50 and haven’t had one yet (you know who you are!), give yourself the best birthday present & make an appointment ASAP for a screening colonoscopy. This also goes for anyone out there younger than 50 who has had symptoms that they are ignoring. We know everyone has different insurance situations but more often than not these are covered. PLEASE, drop what you are doing, and take 5 mins to call your Dr. TODAY to see about getting this done. Need more convincing, read this great article HERE from Providence Health Plan on Mythbusting the colonoscopy: five reasons it’s not so bad.
